ojo de buey Full Bio

Ojo de Buey is a Latin reggae band from Costa Rica that has established itself as one of the most important reggae bands in its country and region. The group has 2 full-length albums: Taste in a cruel time (winner of the ACAM Award for Best Reggae Disco 2011) and Repellent pal Dolor (2013).

It begins as a casual project among friends in May 2007 in San José, Costa Rica. The band was born with the slogan of playing live, playing reggae at parties and bars. Over time, Ojo de Buey goes through a metamorphosis, little by little it integrates a more Latin flavor in its pieces, mixing it with the already prevailing reggae tendency. The result: an introspective balance that allows the group, and its members, to acquire strength, movement and direction. Spaces are opened to compose and write own songs and the original repertoire begins to be the center of attention.

At the end of July 2010, Ojo de Buey goes into a house on the beach for 10 days to record what will be his first album. Wind, piano, hammond and final touch-up arrangements are recorded in Los Angeles in October 2010. The album is mixed by Manuel Jimenez in Arimaka, and mastered by Eric Boulanger in The Mastering Lab, CA. In March 2011, the official launch of “Taste in a cruel time” was made with the beginning of a series of concerts in Costa Rica and the band's first international tour of El Salvador.

In October 2012, the band decided to record their second full-length album, again with Manuel Jiménez. For this new experience, a recording studio is set up in a mountain house in Cartago, Costa Rica, where musicians and the work team lived together for 20 days. The album was mixed and mastered again in the US (Mix: Arimaka, Mastering: The Mastering Lab).

Recently the band has visited countries such as Colombia (3 opportunities), the United States, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and continues with its internationalization process. Ojo De Buey has also shared the stage with very important bands inside and outside Costa Rica, such as Prophetic Culture (9 opportunities), Natiruts, Los Cafres, The Wailers, SOJA, Calle 13, among others.
